THREE MOUNTAINS, ONE PASSION – THE SKI RESORTS IN THE ZELL AM SEE-KAPRUN AREA
You can choose from three ski resorts in Zell am See-Kaprun. The Kitzsteinhorn Glacier ski resort offers first-class skiing from October already when autumn still dominates the other mountains. The Schmittenhöhe high above Zell am See starts the winter season in December every year and offers fantastic pistes for every level of ability. A great selection of sporty pistes and cosy huts for everyone awaits at the Maiskogel Family Mountain in Kaprun.
Skiing in Zell am See-Kaprun means perfectly groomed ski pistes, freeride routes, fun slopes for everyone and stunning parks and pipes. Enjoy some après ski time in the evening before you get ready for great culinary delights in Zell am See-Kaprun restaurants and inns. Ski hire and ski schools complement your skiing package and turn your skiing holiday in Zell am See-Kaprun into something you have been looking forward to all year long!
The ski area consist of the ski areas Zell am See and Kaprun and is called the largest ski area of Europe. You can enjoy the valley and the rest of the ski areas (in total 138km piste). You don’t have to worry about the ski conditions. Snow is guaranteed on the Kitzsteinhorn glacier with a height of 3203m. The pistes on the glacier are definitely worth a visit because of their high lengths and snow quality. Other pistes like the Schmitten are mainly covered by lovely powder snow and walking, for the greater part through the forests, will of course cause a splendid spectacle. It is child-friendly and the trees and many restaurants create an atmospheric area. Your lift pass allows access to the whole region inclusive of glacier and to the ski buses between Zell am See and Kaprun. There are also plenty of possibilities for ski cross-country.
Skiing in Kaprun
Kaprun’s local ski hill is the adjacent compact Maiskogel area, accessible via a chairlift from the north-western corner of the village or by a gondola lift based in the southernmost suburb. Maiskogel is operated as a ‘Family Mountain’ and is perfect for families with young children: with wide and gentle slopes dotted with animal statues, a kiddie-sized snowpark, canopied chairlifts, family-friendly mountain restaurants, plus the popular Maisiflitzer rollercoaster; the area is also the site of the local ski-club training slopes, exciting for spectators of all ages. It is our opinion that the beginner slope in the centre of Kaprun is one of the best places you could learn to ski/board.
The slopes of Kaprun’s main Kitzsteinhorn glacier ski area are accessed via two parallel-running gondola lifts based near the head of the Kapruner Valley, about 10-minutes ski-bus journey away to the south of Kaprun village. These gondolas link with a mid-altitude ‘base area’ services station at Langwied (1,976m) where all ‘home runs’ from the ski area above flow down to; all are graded red but only one is regularly groomed, the others are secured and way-marked but left as natural ‘ski routes’ that are great in fresh powder.
The main ski area stretches out across the extensively groomed Schmiedingerkees and Maurerkees glaciers above the bustling Alpincenter services area at 2,452m (linked with Langwied by gondola and chairlift), served by a network of chairlifts and ski-tows that provide uplift to a fair selection of mild fall-line reds and longer cruise-able blue pistes.
A gondola also serves the summit sector, its top terminal perched at 3,029m, below the 3,203m peak of the Kitzsteinhorn itself. Given secure snow conditions, there’s one short black run down from the summit station to the start of the upper sector pistes, otherwise all slope users must take a short funicular rail-lift down to piste level.
Whereas the Kitzsteinhorn’s main pistes may be a bit tame for anyone with good intermediate or higher skill levels, there are challenges here too: on the pair of black runs on the Maurerkees glacier, on mogul fields, inter-piste powder, and off-piste gullies, BUT do remember that this is a glacial zone with dangerous crevasses, only to be explored away from the secured pistes when accompanied by a qualified local guide. The area also houses three good snowparks, plus a halfpipe.
Skiing in Zell am See
Zell am See’s 80km (50 miles) of trails are largely located on the Schmittenhöhe mountain. There are various access points to the area, but most people staying in central Zell will take the gondola, the base of which is a few minutes walk above the town center.
Beginners normally start up by the aforementioned Sonnenalm cable cars and will find the easier blue runs up on top of the mountain, with the option of taking the lift back down if the long run back is too daunting in the early days.
Intermediates will enjoy Zell am See’s skiing the most with more than 50km (32 miles) of red and blue runs to whizz around on, including an 6.5km (4 mile) trail, the Schutt, descending the full 1200 meter vertical back down to the resort.
Advanced skiers have several long medium-steep blacks descending through the forest to enjoy, some usually mogulled, and Zell has a reputation for good off-piste powder when conditions are right.
Zell am See’s sunny slopes do have good snow-making cover on nearly two-thirds of the piste, however most skiers will wish to visit Kaprun’s glacier skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier during their stay. This is accessed by a ski bus which runs every 20 minutes in high season, and once an hour during other periods, journey time is around 30 minutes and the service is free to lift pass holders. Lift queues at the glacier, that resulted in the past when skiers from neighboring low level resorts arrived in droves when conditions were poor, have been eased by the installation of a new six seater chair.
Cross country skiers have up to 200km (125 miles) of trails around the valley including a 10km (6 mile) track on frozen Lake Zell, a three kilometre (two mile) illuminated track at Schüttdorf and a two kilometer high altitude trail on the Schmittenhohe at 1,500 meters.
Snowboarding in Zell am See
Zell am See is a top destination for snowboarders with the Europa Sport Region. Local to Zell am See there’s a Fun Park with half pipe at Glocknerwiese on the Schmittenhöhe with one of Austria’s original two Boarder Cross courses with jumps, ramps and bumps and there’s plenty of surfing and cruising terrain all around the Region. The nightlife model also fits most ‘boarders requirements.
Ski Area Features
Not Only The Ski Pistes …
… offer excitement in Zell am See-Kaprun in winter. Even though the ski resorts, mountains and ski pistes are quite something, the “adventure region” in the Salzburger Land offers plenty of other experiences for you on your winter holiday. Exploring the cross-country ski tracks around Kaprun, Bruck, Schüttdorf and Zell am See, you are also out and about on two skis. Classic or skating style, you take your laps at a dynamic pace across the wonderful network of cross-country ski tracks. The night cross-country ski tracks and the high-altitude cross-country ski tracks on the mountains are very special challenges. Skiers who work out their own downhill runs, advancing into areas where no lift and mountain railway can take you, go ski touring. Many great ski tours from easy to challenging and a designated “ski touring mountain” at the Ronachkopf in Thumersbach make it clear from the start: ski touring is hard to beat when it comes to popularity. So, get your skins on, click the ski fittings to “go” and off you go on a tour into the backcountry between Hohe Tauern and the Pinzgau Grass Hills. If you are not so keen on exciting ski downhill runs but still want to advance into the wintry mountains’ nature, then you go out and about on snowshoes and in winter hiking boots.
Don’t feel like skiing? – The Kaprun region offers a winter-holiday of indulgence and Relaxation for everyone!
You have a choice between the world’s longest toboggan run with a height difference of 1.300 meters through a breath taking landscape in Bramberg am Wildkogel, or the Maisflitzer rollercoaster (Kaprun) which will thrill you with some spectacular bends at speeds up to 40 miles per hour.
The run in Bramberg is fully lit in the evening untill 10 pm. Every Tuesday and every Friday, lift rides up are possible until 6:30 p.m.!
There are several skating rinks in the immediate vicinity. You can choose between natural ice (Kaprun, Piesendorf or the Zeller See) or artificial ice (Zell am See).
Horse sleigh ride
Make a romantic sleigh ride through the snowy surroundings. We will be glad to book a seat for you.
Adventure Mountain, the Nagelköpfel in Piesendorf, is a Snow Family Park comprising a toboggan run, zipfbob, trampolines, children’s slalom, 2 ski slopes, an after-ski bar, and other attractions.
Two nights weekly, the night will be turned into day and 2 slopes will be opened and lighted from 19.00 22.00 h.
Off the slopes and apres ski
The most attractive quarter of Kaprun is its central area around the pedestrian Salzburger Platz and the nearby riverside and picturesque crag-perched church. The Salzburger Platz is the liveliest heart of the village, but there are only a few shops and café-bars here and around Kaprun village as a whole; the much livelier nearby lakeside town of Zell am See, a short bus/taxi ride away, is the place to head to for proper retail therapy and true resort ambiance.
One great attraction that draws visitors in the opposite direction though is Kaprun’s fabulous Tauern Spa complex, which features a huge aqua-leisure zone of indoor and outdoor pools, a spacious sauna and steam-room zone, plus a great range of wellness and beauty spa services.
Other visitor attractions in Kaprun village include an interesting small local history museum and a motor museum that specialises in classic vehicles from the 1950s to 1970s.
Kaprun gets fairly lively during apres ski hours and in the evenings: the centrally located Pavillon disco-bar offers the brightest lights and liveliest action in town, but most of the nightlife is to be found in the bars of the resort’s hotels, some of which, such as the Sport Kristall, offer popular pub games and occasional live music.
